Readers of packagePRINTING inBOX will recall that the U.S. FDA is giving food nutrition labels their first makeover in 20 years. It will mean substantial redesigns for many packages. On the heels of this announcement, Canada is also wants the information on packaging to be easier to understand. Two other hot topics around packaging and labels are sustainability and a new way of getting the contents out of packages. On the sustainability front, we're sharing Tetra Pak's white paper on a call for industry commitment to renewability. Think twice before tossing that “expired” food item into the trash. This week, we’re taking a look at expiration dates on food packages and a movement to make them clearer to the consumer, all in an attempt to reduce waste. We’re also looking at the increased demand for retail-ready packaging. On the beverage front, the green Coke labels that have appeared in Argentina and Chile get set to debut in Great Britain and a “smart” vodka bottle lets you know when your spirit has reached the perfect temperature.
