125 Years Young

Keller Crescent, a Greensboro, N.C.-headquartered printer and converter of healthcare secondary packaging, is celebrating 125 years in the industry. For Keller Crescent, which currently enjoys a strong market presence in pressure-sensitive roll labels, package inserts and outserts, and folding cartons for the pharmaceutical, medical device, and healthcare packaged goods industries, longevity is a product of a solid financial and infrastructural foundation and, most significantly, a long history of smart strategic choices.

Baby Boomers - Polischuk

I have often wondered about the period of time defining the baby boom generation. I wasn't sure if it was the period of time directly following the end of World War II when those of my parents' generation picked up their lives and made up for the lost time after several years of separation.

Muscling Forward

"A job-shop on steroids"—that's Bema Incorporated President Glen Galloway's catch-phrase for the 51-year-old, Elmhurst, Ill.-based film printing/converting firm he has owned since 1999. When Galloway took Bema's helm, he set out to bring this catch-phrase to fruition by elevating the firm's long-time job-shop operations philosophy, instituted by founder Sam Shaw, to a super-sized level of implementation.

Perfecting Proofing

The goal of an effective proofing system is to ensure predictable, repeatable results throughout a print run by achieving the closest possible match between the proof and the printing press using color management and screening techniques. An effective proofing system will be able to accurately reproduce trap and overprint characteristics, together with the fine lines and text that are critical in package and label design. Inks or dyes, media, RIPs, and color management tools all will play important supporting roles.
