MILAN, Italy—Nineteen leading companies have decided to join forces and resources to set up a partnership under the name “Flexo4All,” which is an evolution of “Flexo the Alternative,” an agreement between independent businesses initiated by DuPont Packaging Graphics (DuPont™ Cyrel®) more than 20 years ago. It is a strategic cooperation which combines worldwide expertise from independent companies—suppliers of the graphic arts and package printing industry. The members work together in partnership, sharing their experience and knowledge to perfect flexographic package printing while also promoting advantages and innovation. “Flexo is no longer just an alternative to other printing processes and ‘Flexo4All’ was chosen to suggest

Sustainability is getting a lot of well-deserved attention these days. Sporadic activities many months ago have turned into a fairly steady stream of announcements. As the samples below indicate, some are big and some are small, but they all indicate a renewed interest in the environment. • Wal-Mart recently released initial results of its Packaging Scorecard, which evaluates the company’s suppliers on the sustainability of their packaging, is part of Wal-Mart’s initiatives to achieve a five percent reduction in packaging by 2013. In its first month, the company reported that 2,268 vendors had logged on to its site and 117 products had been entered into

NORTHLAKE, Ill.—Sun Chemical announced it will raise prices on packaging, commercial and screen inks sold in North America, effective January 1, 2007. Prices on packaging inks will rise 4 percent to 6 percent, while prices on commercial and screen inks will go up 8 percent. “Despite our efforts to mitigate the impact of the rising costs in raw materials through active involvement with our supplier base and by driving internal efficiencies, we continue to face significant increases in all of our manufacturing costs,” said Richard Pettifor, president, Sun Chemical North American Packaging Inks. “During these challenging times we have taken many steps to reduce
Parsipany, NJ - As part of its strategy to offer complete printing ink solutions, Sun Chemical announced today that it signed a license agreement with DataLase, formerly known as Sherwood Technology, to sell DataLase inks. The DataLase® process allows brand manufacturers to write data directly on packaging materials, and has won awards for innovation and improving product security. DataLase ink is applied to packaging substrates at either the printing or converting stages. Once exposed to a low-power CO2 laser, the DataLase inks chemically react, turning from white to black. Brand manufacturers can utilise the laser to write data such as date codes or
UV inks are commonly used in package-printing applications. So much so that Don Duncan, director of R&D, Wikoff Color Corp., thinks it’s about time to rephrase how we reference ink categories. In referring to water-based and solvent-based inks, he says, “I use the phrase ‘so-called conventional’ because UV inks are now so common that they are no longer ‘unconventional.’ We need a new word for the mixture of oil-based, water-based, or solvent-based inks that UV is replacing. How about ‘old-technology.’” The term “old technology” might not fly (Duncan admits that it’s “a little over-the-top”), but the point is well made. UV inks are firmly
