Printers like to hear their presses running, because hopefully money is being made and customer demands are being met. But shorter runs can tie up a press with more frequent setups. Integrating short print runs into an overall business plan isn’t as easy as it might sound. To accommodate customer demand for these types of runs, a package printer must do its homework long before actually accepting the orders. Impact of shorter runs Print jobs that are shorter than the norm impact printers’ businesses and business operations, but not necessarily negatively as long as they are proactive. “Our short-run sales increased by 50 percent
Boy, there’s a lot to inspection! In-line versus off-line, rewind versus press-mounted, the human eye versus video—these are only a few, but critical, considerations. There are various inspection systems on the market, some for use on the press, and some for use on the rewinder as the web is rewound. Each inspection system is designed to take certain actions when it detects a defect in the printed product. These defects can range from registration to incorrect characters. Turnaround times are critical in today’s package-printing world. Couple quick turnaround with the demand for shorter runs, and your press operators will be switching tools almost constantly. Diecutting is an integral part of the entire printing process and can impact the speed at which you can fulfill print orders. Just as diecutting impacts the speed of your print job, external forces, such as consolidation, globalization, new substrates and shorter runs, affect the diecutting market. “The label printing industry as a whole has been changing rapidly in recent years,” says Frank Hasselberg, executive vice president, Kocher + Beck USA. “These changes also have a huge
