Pittsburgh—Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF) and International Cooperation for the Integration of Process in Prepress, Press, and Postpress (CIP4) announced the formation of a JDF User Group to focus on the implementation of JDF-enabled systems and cross-vendor implementations. The first JDF User Group meeting will be held March 24–25, 2008 in Pittsburgh, PA. The first day starts at 2:00 p.m. at PIA/GATF and will provide a hands-on look at JDF implementations within the facility and a discussion of the challenges to creating successful implementations. Day two will consist of panel discussions, case studies, and peer networking; sessions will finish by mid-day.

PITTSBURGH—The Sustainable Green Printing (SGP) Partnership held its first stakeholders meeting on Nov. 27, 2007 in Arlington, Va. Representatives from the Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF), the Specialty Graphic Imaging Association (SGIA), the Flexographic Technical Association (FTA), environmental groups, and key government agencies were in attendance to take the first steps towards a national registry program for green and sustainable printing practices. The SGP Partnership was formed in June 2007 as a collaboration between PIA/GATF, FTA, and SGIA with the primary goals of defining sustainable green printing and identifying steps that help the printing industry establish sustainable (or green) manufacturing and

PITTSBURGH—The 2008 officers of Printing Industries of America/Graphic Arts Technical Foundation (PIA/GATF) were installed on November 11 at PIA/GATF’s Fall Administrative Meetings. The ceremony took place following the nomination and election of the officers by the Board of Directors. Chairman of the Board—Janet Green, CEO of Greens Inc., Irvine, Calif.Ms. Green is the first female Chairman of the Board in PIA/GATF’s history, which dates back to 1887. A 25-year veteran of the printing industry, Ms. Green has worked in nearly every department in her company, a third generation, family-owned firm which has operated since 1908. PITTSBURGH, Pa.—Printing managers from companies across the country recently traveled to the Pittsburgh, Pa. headquarters of PIA/GATF to attend the inaugural presentation of Lean Manufacturing for Print Managers. This three-day program, one of the industry’s first on the topic, showed printers how to apply the fundamental concepts of lean for faster turnaround, fewer defects, and lower costs. Attendees learned the eight sources of waste, the use of various lean tools, strategies for overcoming barriers, and what “living lean” means for management. It also gave attendees the unique opportunity to participate in a simulated printing plant and measure productivity increases from lean tools such as
