SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The Business of Green Media Conference—which will address "bottom line" issues about not only how to implement sustainable practices, but how to do it profitably—will take place on the Cal Poly campus on January 22.
“The conference agenda addresses the myriad of issues and approaches to help participants understand and install sustainable procedures in difficult economic times,” said Harvey Levenson, head of Cal Poly's Graphic Communication Department. Because of the need to assist the graphic communication industry to ‘reinvent’ itself and grow in light of economic cutbacks, the conference will focus on ‘Being Lean, Green and Profitable in a Shrinking Economy.’
WILMINGTON, Mass.—In the continuation of a partnership that began as founding members of the Networked Graphic Production Partnership (NGP), Prism Group Holdings, Ltd. and MAN Roland, Inc., today announce the installation and demonstration of the Prism WIN management information system (MIS) at the MAN Roland Westmont, Illinois Graphic Center. Prism WIN is responsible for creating the job tickets for all jobs in the Graphic Center and capturing actual material, labor and machine costs through its shop floor data capture module. “We chose to highlight our integration to Prism WIN because of our long-standing JDF connectivity,” said Hal Stratton, director of new technologies at MAN

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif.—Packaging purchasers increasingly demand UV coatings to top off their printing with increased wear resistance and a high gloss shine. To fill that bill more cost effectively, Marrs Printing in City of Industry, California, has added a six-color ROLAND 700 press with inline UV coating capabilities. The new technology has expanded Marrs’ business base and is positioning the company for ongoing productivity gains. Before the arrival earlier this year of the new ROLAND 700, UV coating was an offline proposition at Marrs, requiring a separate, dedicated coating run. The extra step cost considerably in lost time and missed opportunities. Thanks to
Expanding its ongoing commitment to advancing education and research in the graphic arts, MAN Roland has made a “Gold Partner” donation to the Graphic Communication Institute (GrCI) of the California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo. Developed to serve the graphic communication industry, the GrCI is the arm of Cal Poly’s Graphic Communication Department where academic, educational and research resources are applied to the challenges printers are facing today from competing media. “GrCl does research, testing, product evaluations, consulting, and conducts industry seminars and workshops,” says Harvey Levenson, Department Head of the Graphic Communication Department. “Its existence relies on providing services to the
WESTMONT, Ill.—MAN Roland was recently recognized with a Highlight certificate by the state of Hesse in Germany, acknowledging the company’s commitment to make the graphic arts more eco-friendly. The award, which certifies a company’s commitment to sustainable manufacturing and eco-friendly production, was presented by Wilhelm Dietzel, minister of the environment of Hesse, at MAN Roland’s Graphic Center in Offenbach. “It is my pleasure to visit a company in which the topic of environment is part of its corporate philosophy,” he said. In recent years, MAN Roland has invested several million Euros in its Offenbach and Mainhausen factories to maximize energy conservation and minimize waste.
It’s a job that Mr. Clean probably wouldn’t take on, but somebody’s got to do it! Cleaning anilox rolls on a regular basis is part of every printer’s routine—a critical requirement for reliable flexographic printing. Even though anilox roll cleaning is a common requirement in flexo printing, problems still abound due to misapplication or lack of knowledge. To get an idea of some real-world problems (and solutions) in the industry, packagePRINTING contacted a number of companies that provide anilox roll cleaning solutions to see how they solved specific customer problems. They supplied the following examples. Clogged up Bill Poulson, northeast technical graphic advisor
WESTMONT, Ill.—MAN Roland is taking the lead in informing the graphic arts industry that environmentally sound practices are not only good for the planet, but are good for business as well. In a new educational campaign that is driven by advertising, public relations, direct mail, and a how-to guide, MAN Roland is providing printers with an action plan that they can use to improve the environmental sustainability of their operations, while winning new customers. “Whatever your thoughts are on climate change, one fact is certain: The less resources and energy we waste, the more our economy will expand,” says Vince Lapinski, CEO of MAN
