Last month, packagePRINTING attended the pre-drupa media conference, where industry leaders announced somewhat guarded plans for the two-week-long trade show, to be held May 29-June 6 in Dusseldorf, Germany. Although much of the focus was on the commercial print industry, several companies discussed what package printers can expect at drupa 2008. Heidelberg is stepping out with its new “HEI TECH” campaign, which includes its “HEI Performance” and “HEI Value” solutions. The company’s Packaging Print Solutions Hall will feature HEI TECH Centers for Special Applications and Very Large Format and Integrated Packaging Production, as well as Information and Business Centers and A HEI School, for

TORONTO, Ontario—The International Cooperation for the Integration of Processes in Prepress, Press and Postpress (CIP4) organization and Ryerson University announced a free “JDF Education Event” to be held at Ryerson University in Toronto on Tuesday, Feb. 19, 2008. By Dr. Peter Harrop IDTechEx Printed electronics is a term that covers printed and potentially printed electronics and electrics. It is the basis of an emerging $300 billion business embracing transistors, memory, displays, solar cells, batteries, sensors, lasers, and much more. This new electronics will appear as adhesive tape, wallpaper, billboards, labels, skin patches, smart packaging, and books because it will be foldable, conformal, wide area, ultra low cost, edible, rollable, transparent and biodegradable as needed. Yes, there are transparent transistors, batteries, solar cells and more on the way and Kodak has recently patented edible RFID on medicine. And it will be pivotal to
California Polytechnic (Cal Poly) State University’s Graphic Communication Department is no stranger to industry partnerships. The San Luis Obispo-based school has enjoyed equipment donations from Heidelberg and Kodak for decades. The department currently runs a four-color Speedmaster CD74 and uses two Kodak platesetters. And, Cal Poly does not take these donations and other forms of industry support lightly. Because of these types of partnerships, “[students] are immediately productive upon entering the industry and require less training than the average new person entering the industry,” said Harvey Levenson, department head of the Graphic Communication Department. “In fact we have encountered situations where our graduates enter
Brand protection is hot and getting hotter. A brand’s equity needs to be protected at all costs. It is sometimes developed over decades, can impart implicit trust, and can be lost in a matter of days, if not hours. Some major consumer products companies are getting first-hand exposure to the ramifications of what can happen. Mattel is taking a beating with multiple recalls involving its Fisher-Price and Barbie brands, and Colgate-Palmolive’s Colgate toothpaste has had a scare due to counterfeit products on the shelf. Companies have an exposure with any negative events impacting their brands whether they are responsible for the problems or not—and they
NASHVILLE, Tenn.—Network PDF—a team of experts working together to connect IT and production across a global network using industry standards, in partnership with key industry associations including CIP4, IDEAlliance and PIA/GATF—has created a new educational program focused on management information systems (MIS). At the heart of this program is the creation of “MIS: A Guide for Managers,” a manual that explains connectivity, from content creation into an automated production system. “MIS is an essential tool for helping printers transition from a craft to a modern manufacturing industry. The MIS Guide does a great job of educating the graphic communications industry about the benefits of
