According the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), food-borne illnesses cause about 300,000 hospitalizations and 5,000 deaths every year in the United States. Food recalls are also really, really expensive. In the United States alone, the economy can hemorrhage about $7 billion a year due to these problems.
