Taylor Box Co., a third generation family business that has been in operation for 130 years, has an illustrious history and doesn't mind using equipment that has some experience tied to it, choosing recently to add a reconditioned 52” Lawson paper cutter from Colter & Peterson to its fleet of bindery department hardware. Paul Atkins, production manager for Taylor Box, knew C&P had a reputation for rebuilding quality paper cutters, updating the back gauge, electronics and safety systems while providing like-new tolerances and a full warranty.
A custom rigid paper box, slipcase and specialty printer in business since 1885, Taylor's most visible work is for marketing departments in the food and beverage, consumer goods, hotels, publishing, confections and jewelry categories, but it also handles interior design, education, real estate, automobile and personal care products.
“We do a lot of diecutting for our boxes and trim many of the sheets on the Lawson," said Atkins. "Our average sheet size is 41” x 29-1/2”, and the boxes when finished range from as large as 27” in height, 16” wide and 13” deep, to as small as 2” x 1.5” x .375”. He uses the cutter for one shift every day, cutting various calipers and grades of cardboard from .012 SBS all the way up to .120 pasted chip, and also employs a 54” Polar to exclusively cut papers.
The Lawson cutter includes a Microcut computer guided back gauge system. Microcut not only memorizes cut sequences and guides the back gauge into position for each action, but the automated program also offers safety features that are second to none in the marketplace.
“We had some initial tweaks with Microcut but everything has worked well,” remarked Atkins. “I’m very impressed with the safety features on this cutter. It brings us more in line with compliance issues that our company follows and is a very user-friendly device to work with.”
