First Solar has taken orders of over $1.5 billion in recent months in the USA and France for its thin film cadmium telluride photovoltaic units, because they are more economical than conventional silicon. Its total order book now amounts to many billions of dollars. These devices did not need to be printed reel to reel to achieve that success.
