Practical Guidelines For Graphic Arts Professionals Available
GHENT, Belgium—Ghent PDF Workgroup (GWG), the international assembly of graphic arts professionals established to create, test, and disseminate best practices and specifications for publishing workflows, today announces availability of a free white paper, PDF Specifications in Practice.
The GWG white paper was written to provide readers with a comprehensive overview of current PDF specifications developed by the GWG, and how to utilize these specifications to achieve best practice PDF workflows for the range of print categories including magazines, newspapers, sheetfed offset and digital. PDF Specifications in Practice offers background information on GWG specifications; and illustrates their use in popular desktop, PDF generation, and PDF verification applications.
The white paper explains why demand led to development of the GWG PDF specifications, and the commonalities and differences among them. Additionally, the paper describes the publishing workflows supported by GWG specifications and highlights the different stages of the workflow where GWG specifications can streamline the process.
Readers will find a detailed comparison between the Ghent PDF Workgroup specifications and the PDF/X standard as well as an overview of the main DOs and DON'Ts in a typical publishing workflow.
This white paper is the first in a series of educational materials to be issued by the GWG. Additional white papers including GWG's Color Management in Practice are scheduled to be available in 2005. More information on additional white papers will be announced as they become available.
GWG's PDF Specifications in Practice white paper was written collaboratively by several GWG members, including Menno Mooij, Elli Cloots, Peter Maes, Pascale Ginguené, David L. Zwang, and David van Driessche.
