CHICAGO—Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation today announced that Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Patrick J. Moore received the Pulp & Paper Safety Association’s (PPSA) Executive Eagle Award for 2005. The annual award is presented to a pulp and paper industry executive that demonstrates a firm commitment to industry safety and makes significant contributions to the improvement of safety and health programs within his or her company. The Executive Eagle Award was presented to Moore June 14 during the PPSA conference in Orlando.
“It is an honor to receive the Executive Eagle Award for Smurfit-Stone’s safety efforts. I share this award with all the Smurfit-Stone employees who follow our Smurfit-Stone Accident Free Environment (SAFE) process day in and day out, and help to ensure the safety of their fellow employees,” said Moore.
During Moore’s tenure as CEO, which began in 2002, Smurfit-Stone has significantly improved its safety record, as measured by Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards. In 2005, Smurfit-Stone’s domestic operations worked 60,000,405 total hours and had an OSHA recordable case rate (RCR) of 1.16 – the best in company history.
For the past four years, Smurfit-Stone has led the major integrated companies in the pulp and paper industry in safety performance based on annual statistics compiled by the PPSA and the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA). Since 2002, the company’s OSHA RCR improved by more than 40 percent.
Moore joined the former Jefferson Smurfit Corporation in 1987 as assistant treasurer and was appointed treasurer in 1990. He was promoted to vice president and treasurer in 1993. In 1994, Moore was named vice president and general manager of the company’s Industrial Packaging division. He was promoted to vice president and chief financial officer of Jefferson Smurfit Corporation in October 1996. He continued in that capacity when Smurfit-Stone Container Corporation was formed in November 1998. In January 2002, Moore was named Smurfit-Stone’s president and chief executive officer.
Prior to joining Smurfit-Stone, Moore served 12 years at Continental Bank in Chicago in various corporate lending, international banking, and administrative positions.
Moore serves on the boards of the AF&PA, JP Morgan’s National Advisory Board, International Corrugated Case Association, Sustainable Forestry Board, Metropolitan YMCA of St. Louis, Boys Hope/Girls Hope, Big Shoulders (Chicago), and Archer Daniels Midland; and also serves on the Nasdaq CEO Council and Washington University’s John M. Olin School of Business National Council. He participates in numerous associations including Civic Progress (St. Louis) and The Commercial Club of Chicago. He earned a BS degree in business administration from DePaul University, with a concentration in finance.
