Avery Dennison Turns 75
PASADENA, Calif.—Avery Dennison Corporation marked its 75th anniversary as a company on June 2 by having Chairman, President, and CEO Dean A. Scarborough and the company's leadership team ring the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange.
Avery Dennison was founded in June 1935 by R. Stanton Avery, who developed the world's first self-adhesive label and label-making machinery in a loft above a flower shop in downtown Los Angeles. Sales for his first six months of selling removable price stickers totaled $1,391. Today, the company named after him has evolved into a $6 billion global leader in labeling and packaging solutions, retail branding and information solutions, and organization and identification solutions for work and home.
"Innovation that improves customers' businesses and lives has been at the heart of Avery Dennison since 1935," Scarborough said. "I'm excited about the future as we honor our past. Avery Dennison has always stood for innovation, and that legacy continues to propel the company forward as we invest in new markets, products, and technology to better serve our customers throughout the world."
In an interview with packagePRINTING, Don Nolan, group VP for the Roll Materials Division, said the company is "bullish" on the future. "Growth is on everyone's mind," he says. For Avery, growth opportunities are focused on three areas: emerging markets, increased pressure-sensitive (p-s) labeling penetration; and innovation.
One example of new penetration Nolan cites is a Korean company that has branded eggs by replacing its direct print container with a p-s labeled product. He also highlighted Avery Dennison's distribution arrangement with Polysack Plastic Industries. Polysack's Polyphane™ Fit roll-fed shrink films have very high shrink ratios (up to 50 percent) and can be easily separated from PET containers for recycling.
The company is planning commemorative events throughout the anniversary year.
Microsoft Conference Benefits Package Printer
OAKVILLE, Ontario—Every year, Microsoft Convergence conference gives customers and partners the opportunity to meet to maximize the benefits from Microsoft existing and new technology. Aaron Leifling from The Printing Plant, a narrow-web flexo printer specializing in prime labels, attended the most recent event.
"This was one of the most valuable conferences that I have ever participated in. With more than 400 sessions just on Dynamics GP, I was able take back a multitude of information to my company that we could use to help streamline our business processes and eliminate some of the extra steps when using the system."
The Printing Plant has been using Microsoft Dynamics GP fully integrated with Computer Productivity Services (CPS) Print Management system since 2005. "We believe there are significant benefits in the ability to seamlessly connect production with the Microsoft Office family of products," says Gerald Clement, senior partner, Computer Productivity Services Inc.
