WEST HARTFORD, Conn.—Matik North America, the exclusive distributor for Edelmann Graphics GmbH, has launched the latest generation of narrow web presses from Edelmann in North America. Matik has appointed an Edelmann specialist, Chris Davis who has moved from the UK to raise the profile of the Edelmann press line in the North American market.
Tackling a variety of market sectors, the Edelmann press line offers cost effective production solutions for a number of substrates which include Film, PS, PP Clear Box, Aluminum foil and paper. Printed products include, commercial print, packaging (flexible and folding carton), labels, security and half web heat set applications.
There are four machines in the press line, all variable, the most successful being the Color Print series which is available in web widths of 20 ½˝ and 29˝ with print repeats of 16˝ to 48˝, which is unique in the narrow web sector also unique are the substrate thickness which ranges from 0.7 to 26 mills. The two smaller presses are the Web Print 39 (15 ½˝ web width) and the EVO Print which has a 19˝ width.
Hybrid presses have been available for over 10 years with flexo/offset being the most common; however silkscreen, rotogravure, and letterpress are also readily available. A host of converting options add value to the ‘one pass’ advantage of a web press. For exotic applications or where the print process limits the full speed potential of the press (in the case of silkscreen), Edelmann also manufactures offline machines to ensure the full capacity of the printing platform is not compromised.
The presses operate on an internal network which is Microsoft based for easy and clear operation. The ‘open architecture’ system is a stable operator platform which allows for integration of OEM units as well as quick retrofits. Ink profiles can be uploaded directly to the press via CIP3 and a modem allows for speedy support intervention if required. Powerful onboard diagnostics provide operators with an on-site reference. The complete feature list is designed to assist the operator to make best use of his time and skills.
Under development is an ‘open platform’ press which will allow the print processes to be laid down in any order, a common application in the label sector.
Together with OEM signature folders, Edelmann has installed machines into the short run newspaper market where there is a tendency to utilize the less expensive drying option of UV. Telephone directories and small format books, printed on light weight stock have become interesting with the runs decreasing annually in that market sector.
Other drying processes such as EB are becoming more cost effective and in the case of food applications, IR and hot air drying is also available.
An open house is planned at the factory in Germany at the beginning of April, but Matik is also planning to hold an Open House in West Hartford, Conn. to debut the flagship Color Print V72 Servo in North America.
