Disc Graphics Recognized by EPA for Green Power Purchase
Hauppauge, N.Y.—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recognized Disc Graphics, a printing and packaging manufacturer in the U.S., as an EPA Green Power Partner for its purchase of green power. Disc Graphics has purchased more than 575,000 kilowatt hours (kWh) of green power, representing a portion of the company’s annual electrical usage. Disc Graphics is purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) in the form of blended energy from Colorado-based Renewable Choice Energy, a national provider that is building the market for clean and renewable sources of energy.
By purchasing green power, Disc Graphics also qualifies for EPA’s Green Power Partnership, a voluntary program that encourages organizations to purchase green power as a way to reduce the environmental impacts associated with conventional electricity use.
“Disc Graphics’ purchase of green power helps avoid the carbon dioxide emissions associated with our purchased electricity use,” said Margaret Krumholz, president. “Disc Graphics realizes that through aggressive recycling and use of cleaner energy sources our organization can become better stewards of the environment. We know it is not only possible, but essential that the printing industry continues to move forward with eco-friendly initiatives.”
Disc Graphics’ green power purchase further supports the company’s Eco-Friendly initiatives, and its environmental mission statement: “Moving Eco-Consciousness into Action” reflects our commitment to offer our customers renewable, recyclable, sustainable, ecologically-supportive packaging options.
Green power is defined as electricity that is generated from environmentally preferable resources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, biogas, biomass, and low-impact hydro sources. Such resources generate electricity with zero anthropogenic (caused by humans) carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and have a superior environmental profile to conventional power generation. Green power purchases help support the development of new renewable energy capacity nationwide.
Based on national average utility sub region emissions rates, the EPA estimates that Disc Graphics’ green power purchase is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 65 passenger cars each year, or avoiding the equivalent CO2 emissions associated with over 40,000 gallons of gasoline annually.
