Developing a sound purchasing strategy for package printing

Philip Carter, professor at Arizona State University's Supply Chain Management Department, asserts that in order to develop a purchasing strategy, it is important to know the marketplace. Here are some facts about the printing and related support activities industry from the Institute for Supply Management's (ISM) "June 2009 Manufacturing ISM Report on Business."

o Printing and related support activities came in second on the list of seven manufacturing industries reporteing growth in June.

o Of the ten industries reporting growth in new orders, printing and related support activities ranked number 1.

o Five industries reported slower supplier deliveries, with printing and related support activities again at the top of the list.

o Thirteen industries reported decreases in inventory in June, with paper products and chemical products both on the list.

o Printing and related support activities were on the list of industries that reported lower customer inventories, and were also one of eight industries reporting paying lower prices during June.

Certain things are not going to change about printing. Printers will always be laying ink down on a substrate. The speeds at which printers perform this operation will change. The equipment will change. Even the inks will change in terms of what characteristics they possess. And, of course, what will never change is that package printers must purchase these consumables from their suppliers continuously, unless they start making their own substrates and inks.
