Clemson to Offer Digital Proofing for Flexo Seminar
CLEMSON, S.C.—Last year the Clemson Department of Graphic Communications formed a committee of industry leaders to produce a new event in its Seminar Series, “Digital Proofing for Flexography.” The program was so popular that the program is scheduled to return this May 13-16 in twin sessions.
The two sessions ensure that the numbers stay small, below 30, to ensure hands-on experience. The seminar is co-sponsored for the second year by the Foundation of Flexographic Technical Association (FFTA).
Presenting Experts
Some of those committee members that helped shape this program, recognized experts in the field of proofing, have stayed on as key presenters for the weeklong event again this year. The program is led by Jay Sperry, a Department of Graphic Communication faculty member and a research assistant with the New Sonoco Institute of Packaging Design and Graphics. Joining the panel of presenters is Sonoco Institute’s Director, Chip Tonkin, long-time manager of International Papers Food and Beverage Prepress Center; Richard Black of the Pre-press Solutions Division, All Printing Resources Inc.; and Roy Bohnen, director of technology, Tekgraf-New Vision. Discussing expanded gamut proofing will be John Weissberg of Print Science.
“Test Drive” Breakout Sessions:
The Seminar Series includes day-and-a-half events that address specific problems within the industry. The attendees will split their time between a mix of presentations and discussions led by experts and hands-on activities, in this case proofing evaluations led by the proofing vendors themselves. A range of proofing technologies that will be available for hands-on proof production in the breakout sessions including digital halftone, expanded colorant inkjet, continuous and halftone inkjet, soft proofing, and multiple color management systems.
Topics covered will include:
• Checklist approach to verifying contract proof accuracy;
• Review of the characterization process and press data required;
• Proofing spot colors, overprint prediction, substrate texture and minimum dots;
• Range of current proofing technologies on the market;
• RIP’s and the proofing workflow;
• Remote proofing; and
• Proofing 7-color process and expanded gamut.
This seminar will be held May 13-14 and May 15-16, with a golf outing scheduled for the afternoon of May 14 at The Walker Course. Vendors providing proofing systems and expertise will include CGS ORIS, Kodak, Latran Technologies, EskoArtwork, EFI, and PrefectProof.
