More than 20 recruits completed the Paperboard Packaging Council's (PPC) biannual Folding Carton Boot Camp from Nov. 17-18, 2015 at PPC headquarters in Springfield, Massachusetts. The premier educational platform for all things folding carton, this popular workshop gives newcomers a comprehensive overview of the entire carton converting process by harnessing the expertise and knowledge of some of the most experienced names in the industry.
Representatives from Atlas Die, Bobst, Burt Rigid Box, Esko, Heidelberg, Henkel, Hewlett-Packard, KBA, Metsä Board Americas, River Valley Paper, and Wikoff Color taught at the workshop, as did Ben Markens, president of PPC.
“Our instructors are immersed in the paperboard packaging industry so they have a working knowledge of the tips and tricks and latest technologies in their areas of expertise, “ Markens said. “You can’t get an educational experience like this anywhere else.”
At the workshop, students learned to distinguish between the different types of paperboard as well as how board is recovered and recycled. They also learned the difference between sheet- and web-fed processes, took in sessions on structural design, workflow, and color theory, and were educated on the latest technologies in analog and digital printing, tooling, diecutting, and windowing. Inks, coatings, folding, and gluing were also covered in depth.
Participants were presented with certificates of achievement at the completion of the workshop.
“I became the president of International PaperBox in May 2015, and relocated from the Bay Area to take up my new position,” Jay Tapp, a Boot Camp attendee, said. “Although I had an extensive background in UV and digital printing, labels and decorated folding carton production, PPC’s Boot Camp was an excellent refresher and brought me right up to date with all the latest developments in each aspect of the value chain for folding carton manufacturing."
The Folding Carton Boot Camp is just one of many educational programs offered by PPC. Other offerings include members-only webinars and white papers, commissioned peer-reviewed studies, and government affairs updates.
