Air Motion Systems has expanded its portfolio of LED-based curing solutions by rolling out a new compact, low-profile LED-UV curing module, the XD series.
First unveiled at drupa 2016, a sample Label XD Series unit was on display at LabelExpo Americas 2016. The Label XD Series introduces a lower-cost LED curing solution for low- and mid-speed label/flexo presses.
The Label XD Series is designed as a more affordable alternative to the company’s flagship XP Series LED-UV line, and is ideal for use on small (half-size) and mid-size presses, and short-run and on-demand digital and flexo setups.
Label XD Series units can be built to any requested width, as small as a few inches, and up to 3.2m (126˝) wide, to readily provide seamless curing on any width of press.
This chip-based (bulb-free) curing system also features a thin, super-compact form factor in terms of lamp-on-press — the thinnest profile design of any LED-UV module available on the market today. This makes the Label XD Series easily integrated on presses that have little space to spare.
In terms of intensity, the Label XD Series can deliver a power density as great as 25 W/cm2, and wavelength options of 340, 365, 385, 395 and 405 nanometers are available — the 385-395nm setup is most common for offset and flexographic printing.
The LED chips have an expected life of 30,000+ hours or more without degradation, and with more consistent curing, and draw significantly less energy than a standard mercury-based UV-curing lamp system does, so printers enjoy substantial savings on their electric bills.
An easily connected dual-pass high-flow water circuit keeps lamps consistently cool, even in the most extreme environments, and provides a level of security and safety not found with air-cooled systems.
Universal T-slot mounting channels make the modules easy to mount on a host of machines, and ensure that XD Series units are easy to move in the event a press needs servicing.
AMS’s patented Dura Connect electrical hardware provides a military-grade electrical connection that can readily withstand years of uninterrupted use without issue.
The company notes that the maintenance free, rugged design of the Label XD Series is based on field-proven LED architecture, and made to withstand the abuse and wear expected on a busy press.
